Why it matters
The rise of Alessandro Bastoni as the Azzurri's defensive leader is crucial to the team's future. In a context where Italy is seeking to rediscover its identity after successive failures in the World Cup, its presence on the field could have a significant impact on the group's confidence and on the season to come.

This international truce had a particular flavor for Italy, which is going through a phase of intense reconstruction. After the uproar surrounding the non-appointment of Andrea Pirlo as coach and the resignation of Paolo Maldini from his role as sporting director, the Italian Federation finally chose to recall Roberto Mancini to take charge of the Azzurri. A decision far from being trivial as the coach, after missing the 2022 World Cup following the coronation at Euro 2020, must today breathe a second wind into a group losing its bearings.
The context is heavy: Italy remains on a dark streak with three consecutive eliminations for the World Cup (2022, 2024, 2026), a first in the history of transalpine football. Faced with the urgency of rebuilding and preparing for Euro 2028, this first international window had a test value.
The sporting record offers initial reasons for optimism, despite a delicate start with a home defeat against Belgium (0-2) in the Nations League. The selection was able to remobilize to stand up to France with a draw (1-1) at the Stade de France, before clearly winning against Turkey over two matches (7-2 in total).

Roberto Mancini bet on the revival by offering a chance to nine new players. Among them, Giorgio Scalvini (Atalanta) was impressive in central defense, supported by Alessandro Bastoni (Inter Milan), now an essential figure in the eleven. Bastoni, long criticized for a series of red cards and performances below expectations, has returned to his best level, going so far as to score two goals during this international phase, including one which allowed Italy to obtain a precious point against the Blues.
The Inter defender embodies this new generation of leaders that the Nazionale so badly needs. His consistency, his ability to galvanize his teammates and recover after the storm make him a major asset for Mancini in the race for reconstruction.
In attack, the phenomenon Pio Esposito (also trained at Inter) continues to make an impression. At just 21 years old, he has already scored 7 goals in 13 caps, ranking alongside the legend Giuseppe Meazza for a player of his age. During this window, he distinguished himself with a double and an assist, surpassing at this stage of his career references like Roberto Baggio or Alessandro Del Piero. His efficiency, his power and his maturity suggest a destiny as a historic player for the Squadra Azzurra.
If the road to Euro 2028 and the return to the world summit still promises to be long and strewn with pitfalls, this truce will at least have allowed Italy to lay the first milestones of a reconstruction, driven by emerging individuals and a fierce desire to return to the top of the international spotlight.
