Alphonso Davies lights up Canada's comeback in historic World Cup moment

Thanks to the entry into play of Alphonso Davies, Canada found the opening against South Africa and offered itself a crucial victory in the World Cup. The Bayern Munich player energized his team and allowed Stephen Eustaquio to liberate an entire nation with a decisive goal.
For 75 minutes, Canada and South Africa engaged in a close duel during this first knockout match of the 2026 World Cup. The two teams seemed to neutralize each other: the Canadian pressing remained cautious despite the slow recovery of the South Africans, who, for their part, struggled to create sharp chances.
It was then that Alphonso Davies entered the field, signing his first minutes in this World Cup after 345 minutes of waiting. “I really wanted to come back,” he confided after the meeting. “Being able to experience those 15 minutes, being on the pitch celebrating with my teammates… it was extraordinary.”
Central figure of a golden generation, the Bayern Munich left-back was eagerly awaited, his return having been slowed down in recent months by a cruciate ligament injury. His presence transformed the face of Canada: taking initiatives on the side, a leadership role, and above all a constant threat which revitalized the entire group.

Stephen Eustaquio, decisive scorer, did not hide Davies' contribution: "When Alphonso comes on, everyone feels it. He is our best player, even one of the best left defenders in the world. His presence pushes the team to surpass itself." As soon as he returned, Davies increased the exchanges on the left with Eustaquio and Richie Laryea, creating spaces in the South African defense. He quickly found Jonathan David in depth, but the Juventus player's shot hit Ronwen Williams.
Certainly, the Canadian full-back was not yet 100%, taking care of himself physically and limiting his runs. But even when reduced, it forced the South Africans to readjust their system, freeing up space in the center. In added time, Canada exploited one of these intervals: launched from the right, Eustaquio was served in the middle of the race and did not hesitate to adjust Williams with a recovery which delivered the entire Canadian camp.
After remarkable resistance, the South Africans saw their journey come to a sudden halt. “It wasn't a really dangerous situation, but what a finish,” admitted goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. “At this level, sometimes you need a bit of success, and she was on their side today.”
Canada thus joins the quarter-finals and will face the winner of Morocco–Netherlands, two big names according to Alastair Johnston and Eustaquio. What’s more, coach Jesse Marsch will now be able to count on Alphonso Davies ready to gain momentum. “I felt good, it takes time to regain confidence and rhythm, but it was a real satisfaction,” confided the player afterwards.
