SC Cambuur are reversing the trend in the Eredivisie after a very difficult start. The team coached by Johan Plat had not taken any points during its first four days, but now has eight points gleaned from its next four matches. This upturn in form coincides with a notable tactical adjustment: after the defeat against FC Twente, Plat moved from a three-man defense to a two-man central team.
In this new scheme, Billy van Duijl, on loan from AZ, forms a solid duo with Ismaël Baouf. If we cannot attribute the improvement in results solely to this change, the contribution of the young defender is undeniable. A visual analysis highlights the qualities that Van Duijl brings to the defensive block and to the construction of the game.
What the video reveals, first of all, is the player's confidence when he has the ball. Van Duijl stands out for his ability to move the ball cleanly from the restart, find solutions in tight spaces and actively participate in conservation. His presence offers an additional ball exit option which allows Cambuur to avoid opposing pressure and better control certain phases of play.

But the impact of the AZ loanee is not limited to possession. Without the ball, his progress is also visible: intelligent positioning, support for opposing actions and timed interventions contribute to solidifying a hinge which previously seemed more fragile. The Van Duijl–Baouf duo now gives more consistency to the heart of the defense, which translates into better collective organization and a reduction in dangerous ball losses in the backcourt.
For AZ, who agreed to loan Van Duijl to Cambuur, the situation looks like a success: the player accumulates playing time in a competitive championship, progresses tactically and confirms signs of defensive maturity. For Cambuur, the loan provides immediate reinforcement to a team in search of stability.
This video analysis therefore shows why Van Duijl is considered a valuable asset. His contribution in the possession phase, combined with a notable development without the ball, largely explains why Cambuur managed to launch a positive series after a complicated start to the season. It remains to be seen whether this dynamic will continue over time, but for now the loan appears beneficial for all parties involved.
The rest
With the current momentum, SC Cambuur hopes to continue capitalizing on Van Duijl's performances to climb the Eredivisie standings. The next meetings will be decisive in assessing whether the team can maintain this form and whether the Van Duijl-Baouf duo can continue to solidify the defense. Coaches and fans will closely monitor the progress of this collaboration.
