This type of friendly performance is crucial to establishing a positive dynamic before the start of official competitions.

Why it matters

This friendly victory boosts Cagliari's confidence heading into the Serie A season. Il Cagliari vince pure in amichevole: Nzola pareggia il vantaggio del Rayo, poi il succo ai rigori.

Cagliari continues with positive momentum at the start of summer preparation by winning a new friendly match, this time against Rayo Vallecano, in Madrid. This confrontation, played at high intensity despite the friendly setting, ended in a 1-1 draw at the end of 90 minutes, then a victory on penalties for the Sardinians. This success allows the team coached by Fabio Pisacane to capture the “Vallecas Trophy”.

The first period was clearly dominated by the Spanish club, much more incisive offensively. Rayo quickly opened the score in the 24th minute thanks to Alvaro, putting Cagliari in difficulty. But goalkeeper Radunovic was imperious throughout the first half, making several decisive saves which prevented the locals from increasing the score and allowed the Italians to stay in the match.

In the second half, the scenario remained quite similar, with a certain domination of Rayo, but without seeing any major recurring danger. While the outcome seemed to tilt in favor of the Madrid club, Cagliari managed to come back to the score. On a cross from Sugamele, Nzola was able to win and catapult the ball into the goal, thus balancing the game and restarting the debates.

The two teams therefore decided between themselves during a long and tense penalty shootout, requiring twelve attempts to finally prove Cagliari right. Rayo side, Isi missed his fourth attempt, offering hope to the visitors. However, the Sardinians also had their failures, notably Gagliardini, who missed his shot. In the end, the last shot converted by Ze Pedro sealed the Italian victory, after Pelayo had also missed his shot.

This friendly victory constitutes good preparation for Cagliari before the official resumption of Serie A. It also illustrates the team's ability to not give up and to be combative, in particular thanks to players like Nzola and Radunovic who weighed in on this meeting. The Vallecas trophy remains a beautiful memory for the Sardinian club before focusing on the coming season.

The rest

Cagliari will continue their summer preparation with the aim of refining their performances before the start of the Serie A season. Coaches and players will analyze this match to identify areas for improvement, particularly in defense. This success could also serve as a springboard to approach the next friendly matches with a winning mentality.
