Malagò candidacy and division over secretary general

Serie A is holding an assembly this Wednesday to discuss the renewal of support for Giovanni Malagò for the presidency of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), as well as the succession to the position of general secretary currently held by Marco Brunelli. This meeting takes place in a delicate context marked by the FIGC commissionership and internal differences.

According to Tuttomercatoweb.

Why it matters

The Serie A assembly is crucial for the future of the management of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), especially in a context where the federation is under provisional administration. Support for Giovanni Malagò could influence the stability and future direction of Italian football, especially regarding the management of Serie A clubs.

Key points

  • Malagò's candidacy and division over the secretary general.
  • Serie A is holding an assembly this Wednesday to discuss the renewal of support for Giovanni Malagò for the presidency of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), as well as the succession to the position of general secretary currently held by Marco Brunelli.
  • Trade Malagò's candidacy and general segregation sponsorship: Serie A in assembly.

Serie A meets today in assembly from 11:30 a.m., with major discussions on the agenda concerning the direction of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). At the heart of the debates, maintaining support for Giovanni Malagò, former president of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), expected to once again assume the presidency of the FIGC during the next elections set for December 14. After an initial appointment dedicated to an electoral purpose, Malagò temporarily took on the role of commissioner of the Federation, after the FIGC was placed under provisional administration following a problem with the regularization of its affiliation. This unprecedented trophy, the ninth in the history of the Federation, plunged the latter into a complex administrative situation.

The Serie A assembly is expected to confirm in the coming hours the renewal of Malagò's name as a candidate, although the exact timing remains to be clarified. The collection of signatures in support, which requires only 11 votes from 20 clubs without an immediate voting commitment, had already been carried out behind the scenes last spring.

In this context, the question of the secretary general also remains eminently sensitive. Marco Brunelli, in office, sees his position called into question; the Federation indeed wishes to prevent it from validating the candidacy of Malagò, being the one who had initially endorsed it. A change of holder is envisaged, without however making Brunelli a scapegoat. Discussions are underway to offer him another internal role within the Federation while the succession to his position is not unanimous. The name of Giancarlo Viglione, responsible for the legislative sector of the FIGC, is circulating as a potential replacement, following a compromise between Malagò, the Players' Association and that of the Coaches.

From a regulatory point of view, the appointment of the secretary general must be made by the president of the Federation, after consultation with CONI and advice from the Federal Council. However, the latter is currently dissolved, and Malagò, as commissioner, combines these responsibilities, which poses a problem of statutory compliance. To avoid any forcing, a provisional solution could consist of appointing a temporary worker from federal structures, postponing the final appointment until the end of the electoral process.

This Serie A assembly comes at a key moment for the management of Italian football, in search of stability as the electoral deadlines approach and in a climate marked by close control from CONI which has criticized the administrative management of the Federation.

The rest

Assembly discussions are expected to result in confirmation of support for Malagò, with elections scheduled for December 14. At the same time, the question of the succession of Marco Brunelli as general secretary could also be addressed, which could lead to significant changes within the FIGC.
