2026 World Cup: Cape Verde vs Argentina, a duel reflecting the extremes of world football

This Friday evening in Miami, Argentina and Cape Verde will cross swords in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. A clash that looks like a big gap, between one of the best players of all time, Lionel Messi, and Vozinha, a 40-year-old Cape Verdean goalkeeper who was still completely unknown three weeks ago. This meeting symbolizes the fabulous trajectory of Cape Verde, which is playing its very first World Cup final phase and creating one of the biggest surprises of this World Cup.

Cape Verde's debut was already an achievement: the African team held Spain, the European champion, to a draw with a score of 0-0, a result qualified as one of the greatest exploits in the history of the World Cup. Then, after draws against Uruguay, double winner of the competition, and Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde qualified by finishing second in their group. This extraordinary journey now leads him to face Argentina, five-time finalist and three-time world champion, and reigning champion.

The historical contrast between these two nations is striking. Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony which became independent in 1975, only joined FIFA in 1986, when Argentina was already a power which had played in the first World Cup in 1930. Argentina has since won world trophies in 1978, 1986 and 2022, as well as a record 16 Copa America, while Cape Verde has only participated in its first Cup. of Nations only in 2013, having never yet won in major major competitions.

The Cape Verdean team relies heavily on its diaspora, particularly in Europe, with only twelve players born locally – the majority play in Portuguese, French or Dutch clubs, often outside the five major championships. Vozinha, the goalkeeper, is free from any contract after a final season in the Portuguese second division.

In contrast, the Argentine squad is richly endowed and experienced, with a total value estimated at more than 800 million euros, ranked seventh at the World Cup, and five players are worth more than the entire Cape Verde team combined. In comparison, the Cape Verdean selection is valued at less than 55 million euros, one of the lowest-rated teams in the tournament.

This unbalanced confrontation on paper highlights inequalities off the field, such as demographics and the economy: Argentina has more than 46 million inhabitants and a massive economy, while Cape Verde has around 530,000 inhabitants and an economy 200 times smaller.

Despite these differences, this match promises to be a highlight of the World Cup, embodying the spirit of surprise, hope and emotion that often transcends football's greatest celebration. Lionel Messi, already a legend, will challenge Vozinha, symbol of an extraordinary adventure for his country.
