Scotland will not see the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. Despite an opening victory, John McGinn's teammates failed to climb among the eight best third-placed teams. As a direct result of this elimination, the Scottish Football Federation announced the resignation of Steve Clarke, seven years after taking office. A page is turning, but history repeats itself for Scotland, who have never made it past the group stage during their nine World Cup appearances and four Euros.
However, expectations were high after the historic qualification won against Denmark in November, which allowed Scotland to return to the World Cup after 28 years of absence. The team launched its tournament perfectly by beating Haiti (1-0), thanks to a deflected goal from John McGinn, under the eyes of thousands of supporters who came to the United States. But faced with two solid opponents from the world's top 10, the dream quickly ended: 1-0 defeat against Morocco then heavy 3-0 fall against Brazil in Miami, reducing the Scottish goal difference (-3).

Steve Clarke and several executives of the group had already recognized, on the evening of the rout against Brazil, that qualifying was an achievement. They had to hope for a series of favorable results in the other groups to hope to see the next round, but the surprise victory of Ecuador against Germany further reduced their chances to 5.26% before the last hope flew away with the Croatian success.
The regrets are all the greater as Scotland, third in Group C with three points, had their destiny in hand during the last match. A share of the points against Brazil would have been enough, but defensive errors were costly: Scott McKenna was dispossessed in his own area to offer the opening goal to Vinicius Jr. The Real Madrid player even thought of scoring a double, but the VAR logically canceled his second goal for a foul. Just before the break, another defensive oversight allowed Vinicius Jr to double the lead with a header, before Matheus Cunha killed all the suspense after the restart. The burst of Scottish pride never threatened Brazilian superiority.
Scotland therefore leaves the World Cup with a bitter taste, with only one goal scored and a premature elimination. It now remains for the federation to turn the page on Clarke to prepare for the future.
