2026 World Cup: the secrets of perfect pitches revealed

Preparing the pitches for the 2026 World Cup is a technological challenge: choice of turf depending on the climate, advanced drainage systems, daily maintenance... Everything is done to guarantee an impeccable playing surface, tested by the challenges and the intensive pace of the world tournament.

For the 2026 World Cup, each field hosting the premier football event will be much more than just a green surface. The pitches deployed in the various stadiums, from Miami to Vancouver, via Mexico and New Jersey, are subject to extreme attention to their selection, preparation and maintenance, in order to meet the demands of an intense schedule and climates as varied as they are demanding.

Gone are the days of makeshift lawns that turned to mud or turned into trenches: today, the design of a global pitch is the result of long-term work combining agronomy, engineering and logistics. The choice of turf depends first of all on the local climate: in cold or shaded stadiums, experts mainly choose mixtures of English ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass, renowned for their resistance and their capacity for regeneration in difficult conditions. On the other hand, for stages very exposed to heat, subtropical varieties such as bermudagrass are favored, capable of withstanding drought and high temperatures.

The soil is also strategic: the sand base facilitates drainage, essential during heavy rains to avoid any soggy terrain. Under the lawn lie sophisticated systems: layer of gravel, drainage, watering, underground heating, even modular structures such as the Permavoid system which serves as a water reserve and active aeration. The technology thus ensures surface uniformity and resilience throughout the world.

Before matches even begin, each lawn is carefully cultivated on specialist farms, cut, fertilized and monitored. Once mature, it is transported in giant refrigerated strips to guarantee its freshness to the stadium, where it will be carefully placed and adjusted on a perfectly leveled ground. Some operations take place in less than 48 hours.

To reinforce the solidity of the carpet, the trend is towards hybrid: natural grass “sewn” with millions of synthetic fibers, in order to limit the damage linked to supports and tackles, without losing the sensations of real natural grass. According to the FIFA guide, this type of reinforcement is entirely authorized.

Throughout the competition, maintenance is daily: the cutting height of the grass is controlled for the speed of the ball, watering adapted according to the playing conditions. Teams immediately repair damaged areas after each match, while the ventilation and lighting systems, sometimes mobile, ensure the vitality of the lawn even under the pressure of successive matches or lack of sunlight. After the competition, some temporary pitches will be removed and the stadiums will return to their usual surfaces.

The simplicity of appearance of the lawn therefore hides treasures of know-how and innovation. It is this balance that ensures that, during the World Cup, football will be the only spectacle in the spotlight.
