2026 World Cup: Philadelphia celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States during the Paraguay-France clash

To celebrate both the American National Day and the 2026 World Cup, Philadelphia offered an exceptional atmosphere, bringing together fans from around the world around the Paraguay-France match and countless festivities.

Philadelphia experienced a historic 4th of July. By hosting a round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup between France and Paraguay, the city was fired up to offer a unique celebration on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Independence of the United States. The atmosphere in the streets and iconic locations like Lemon Hill, where the FIFA Fan Festival was held, was electrifying.

As soon as they arrived in town, French and Paraguayan supporters and fans from all over the world were immersed in a unique festive atmosphere. Songs, patriotic chants and fireworks punctuated the day, while the tricolor flags – blue, white, red for France; red and white for Paraguay – colored the bars and gathering places, giving a very special character to this historic day.

The city, already prepared to receive the crowds for this double celebration, saw an influx of both convinced football fans and curious people who came to enjoy the event. The queues in front of the bars were endless, and the Reading Terminal market displayed international colors, welcoming Brazilian, German and Scottish supporters who came to vibrate to the rhythm of the World Cup.

The festivities continued late into the night: drone shows, fireworks and light shows lit up the city center, while chants of “USA! USA!” and “Happy Birthday America!” could be heard on every street corner.

In this excited atmosphere, the stadium was sold out for the decisive match between France and Paraguay. Kylian Mbappé, thanks to a penalty, sent the Blues to the quarter-finals to the cheers of a colorful audience, where American and French colors mixed as much as the spirit of international fraternity.

For Dan Hilferty, co-chair of the local organizing committee, this event symbolizes unity and Philadelphia's ability to welcome the whole world. “We're not just hosting a game, we're bringing the world together to celebrate America where it all began,” he said.

All local stakeholders share the hope that this edition will leave a lasting legacy and spark a new passion for football among young American generations. Guests and residents underline the generosity of the welcome and the feeling of witnessing a historic moment for football in the United States.

Philadelphia couldn't ask for a better kickoff to the nation's 250th anniversary festivities, driven by the passion of world football.
