2026 World Cup: Ryan Christie invites Scotland to change their mentality to take a step forward

After a successful start to the World Cup against Haiti, Ryan Christie believes that Scotland must aim higher and adopt an ambitious mentality to hope to reach the final stages. A success against Morocco would be historic for the Scots.
Scotland launched their 2026 World Cup perfectly by winning 1-0 against Haiti, thus occupying the lead in Group C, helped by the draw between Brazil and Morocco. This Friday, the selection coached by Steve Clarke will face Morocco at Boston Stadium, with the possibility of validating its ticket for the 1/16 finals in the event of another victory – a first in the history of the country, never out of the group stage.
Ryan Christie, author of a remarkable performance, believes that the team must adapt its ambitions: “Absolutely, we have to think like that. Especially after the result against Haiti. We try not to get carried away, but we also have to capitalize on this dynamic and ride this wave. It’s incredible to play in a World Cup, but you have to quickly adjust your objectives, aim further and continue to push the limits,” he confided.
Statistically, optimism is in order: according to the Opta supercomputer, Scotland has an 80.7% chance of reaching the knockout phase and a 15.3% chance of finishing as leader of its group. Christie nevertheless insists on the need to maintain a solid defensive base against Morocco: “We must limit the chances conceded and seize our chances up front. »

Scotland, however, does not have good memories of its last clash with Morocco in the World Cup: in 1998, the Atlas Lions won 3-0, which remains their biggest victory in the competition. Since then, however, the Scottish dynamic has been encouraging with eight victories in the last eleven official matches (for one draw and two defeats). Their only recent pet peeve: Greece, victorious 3-0 in the Nations League in March 2025, then 3-2 during qualifying in November.
On the Moroccan side, the solidity against European teams is notable: only one defeat in their last six group matches in the World Cup against opponents from the Old Continent (two wins, three draws), the only false note being a setback against Portugal in 2018.
At the dawn of this decisive shock in Boston, everything remains open in this Group C, but Scotland is already planning to mark the history of Scottish football.
