Breel Embolo remained in Switzerland after a further investigation was opened into his ESTA application. The Swiss Federation says his participation in the 2026 World Cup is not compromised and hopes he can rejoin the team midweek.
The Swiss national team flew to the United States on Tuesday to prepare for the 2026 World Cup, but without their striker Breel Embolo. The Swiss Football Federation confirmed that the player did not take his seat on board due to an additional check on his ESTA travel authorization.
“Unfortunately, Breel is currently unable to travel with the team to the United States,” the Federation’s statement said. “His ESTA authorization was approved this morning. But at 10:30 a.m., we were suddenly informed that his ESTA application needed further review. »

According to Swiss media, this examination is linked to a recent conviction in connection with an incident that occurred in 2018 in Basel. On April 21, Breel Embolo was definitively sentenced to a 45-day suspended custodial sentence and a fine of approximately 147,000 euros for several acts of threats during an altercation in Basel.
The Federation specifies, however, that Embolo's presence at the World Cup is not in danger for the moment. She hopes to receive a favorable response in the coming days and that the attacker will be able to join the group on Wednesday or Thursday. Switzerland will face Australia in a friendly match on Saturday as part of its preparation.
