Gabigol, who scored twice in this match, plays a key role in Santos' rise to power. His performance could influence not only the team's morale, but also its impact on the Brasileirão's upcoming matches, as the club looks to capitalize on this winning streak.
Why it matters
Santos' victory against São Paulo is crucial for the club, which has its fifth consecutive victory, an unprecedented performance since 2019. This strengthens their position in the Brasileirão rankings, allowing them to aim for the top places and improve their season outlook. On the other hand, São Paulo's irregularity continues to weigh on its ambitions, leaving its supporters in uncertainty.

The Brasileirão regains its rights. While the “Fifa Super Data” continues – notably with the Seleção expected this Saturday (3) for a friendly match against India at 11 a.m. (Brasilia time) – the Brazilian championship restarted the machine this Friday (2) with the relocation of the postponed match between Santos and São Paulo.
At Morumbi, Santos came back to win 2-1 against São Paulo thanks to a double from Gabriel Barbosa, nicknamed Gabigol. This victory allows Peixe to have a fifth consecutive victory, an unprecedented series since 2019 under the orders of Jorge Sampaoli. A momentum which propels Santos to the top of the ranking and confirms the good dynamic of the Paulista club.
São Paulo, for its part, is paying for its irregularity: the club continues to oscillate and has failed to offer a peaceful Christmas present to its supporters. The result highlights the differences in trajectory between the two teams: Santos is now fully engaged in the race at the top of the table, while São Paulo has yet to find continuity.

The Brasileirão, however, remains marked by several late matches: four teams have fewer matches than the others, and two of them will be on the field this Saturday (3). At the Arena MRV, Atlético Mineiro hosts RB Bragantino at 6:30 p.m. (Brasilia time) in another match postponed from the 21st day. On the other hand, the Chapecoense–Vasco confrontation, scheduled at the Arena Condá, still does not have a rescheduled date.
In the meantime, the schedule for the 29th day has been set and offers interesting posters: RB Bragantino–Mirassol, Internacional–Corinthians, Remo–Grêmio, Vitória–Chapecoense, Botafogo–Vasco, Cruzeiro–São Paulo, Santos–Flamengo, Athletico-PR–Atlético-MG, Fluminense–Coritiba and Palmeiras–Bahia. Among these matches, the Santos–Flamengo clash will particularly attract attention, pitting two prominent teams against each other in the race for first places.
The resumption also marks a break in the preparation of the Seleção, whose friendly program against India is part of the current international window. Between late matches to catch up on and the fight for the top places, the Brasileirão is picking up at a steady pace and promises a lively end to the season.
Reminder of the facts: Santos 2–1 São Paulo (match postponed from day 21) — double from Gabigol. Atlético-MG–RB Bragantino (postponed, Arena MRV) scheduled for this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. (Brasilia time). Chapecoense–Vasco (Arena Condá) no date yet. Full matchday 29 fixture list included above.
The rest
With this success, Santos prepares to face new challenges in the Brasileirão, seeking to maintain its positive momentum. Meanwhile, São Paulo will have to work on its continuity to avoid losing more points in the race for the ranking. The next meetings, particularly those at the MRV Arena, could have a significant impact on the dynamics of the two teams.
