Lecce: Willem Geubbels struggles to establish himself, stability
By OnzeActu · · 5 min read
Willem Geubbels, recruited by Lecce to strengthen the attack, has not yet managed to fully integrate into the team led by Eusebio Di Francesco. After a previous season punctuated by poor support, the coach is banking on stability by relying on players already in place, relegating newcomers, including Geubbels, to more secondary roles for the moment.

Context
Willem Geubbels, former AS Monaco player, is seen as an offensive promise for Lecce in Serie A. However, his integration into the team is hampered by Di Francesco's preference for players already in place, which limits his playing opportunities. Geubbels' development will be closely monitored, especially in a championship as competitive as Serie A.
Why it matters
Willem Geubbels' situation at Lecce highlights the challenges faced by new players in an environment where continuity is favored. Under the leadership of Eusebio Di Francesco, the Serie A club seems to be banking on stability to ensure a successful season after a struggle to maintain. This raises questions about the recruits' integration and their potential impact on the team.
Key points
- Lecce: Willem Geubbels struggles to establish himself, stability.
- Willem Geubbels, recruited by Lecce to strengthen the attack, has not yet managed to fully integrate into the team led by Eusebio Di Francesco.
- Geubbels non si è ancora near il Lecce. I'm the worse for rest of the historical group.
At the end of a previous trying exercise which saw Lecce narrowly save its place in Serie A, the club decided to play the continuity card. For this new season, Eusebio Di Francesco, renowned for his ability to unite a group and promote a well-defined playing identity, relies largely on the elements which already made up the backbone of the team during the last exercise.
Among the new faces, Willem Geubbels was expected to be one of the offensive promises who could bring a breath of fresh air and dynamism. Having played for AS Monaco and known for his speed, the French striker hoped to relaunch his career under the Giallorosse colors. However, the former Ligue 1 member is still waiting to really establish himself in the starting lineup.

At the start of the championship, the choices made by Di Francesco are clear: the coach favors his core of loyal players, already familiar with his automatisms and his playing philosophy. These executives, already responsible for the recovery or maintenance, benefit from a high level of confidence. The usage figures confirm this: players who have already worn the Lecce jersey last season occupy the majority of playing time, and it is they who constitute the backbone of the team during decisive moments.
Faced with this reality, Willem Geubbels and the other recruits see their minutes of play limited. The French striker has so far only had brief appearances – mainly at the end of the match or in specific sequences – without really being able to demonstrate the extent of his potential or sustain himself over the long term. This situation, however, is not unique to Geubbels: the club's strategy, which consists of building the new season on confidence and stability, is temporarily postponing the massive integration of new profiles.
For Geubbels, patience will therefore be essential. As the season progresses and the demands of the schedule may require more turnover, the Lyon-trained striker could seize his chance. But in Lecce, the solidity of the historic group remains, for the moment, the main asset of Di Francesco's project in this first phase of the championship.
The rest
As the season progresses, it will be crucial to monitor how Geubbels adapts to Di Francesco's playing philosophy. If the manager continues to favor his established players, Geubbels may need to seize the opportunities that arise to prove his worth. The performances of Lecce's key players will also be decisive for the team's dynamics and Geubbels' future in the starting XI.
