Madueke and Saka, an “unusual” relationship within an England in search of balance

Noni Madueke stood out during the Three Lions' success against Croatia, winning a penalty converted by Harry Kane. His rival at Arsenal, Bukayo Saka, injured in the Achilles, is struggling to regain his form. Despite this rivalry for playing time both at club and national level, their relationship remains strong and positive.
Noni Madueke shone in England's 4-2 win against Croatia, proving to be one of the Three Lions' standouts. He notably caused the penalty converted by Harry Kane, which allowed England to take the advantage. His teammate at Arsenal, Bukayo Saka, expected to start on the right wing during the next World Cup, is however hampered by an Achilles tendon injury from which he has suffered since March. This situation places Madueke and Saka in an unusual dynamic, where they find themselves in direct competition for playing time both for club and national team.
Saka, who made his 50th appearance for England in the win over Croatia, described the setting as "unique" and admitted he doesn't fully understand the mechanics but finds it works, speaking about his relationship with Madueke. Thomas Tuchel, England coach, praised Madueke when communicating the list of players selected for the World Cup. The German coach praised his consistent performances with the England team under his leadership, citing the player's ability to turn a match on its head with his one-on-one skills.

Tuchel also expressed his desire for his team to adopt a style of play close to the physicality of the Premier League. Despite fighting for places, Madueke and Saka are close off the pitch, with Saka calling his teammate "brother". At Arsenal, Mikel Arteta has been able to manage the presence of both wingers simultaneously during the 2025-26 season, a tactical pattern that Tuchel could be tempted to exploit during the World Cup. Madueke often played on the left, while Saka sometimes occupied the number 10 position, contributing to the Gunners' victory this season.
In total, Madueke made 43 appearances last season, scoring 8 goals and providing 4 assists in all competitions, playing an active part in ending Arsenal's trophy drought.
