Gabriel Moscardo, now an Espanyol midfielder, says he was in Barça's sights in the summer of 2023 and claims that his father met Deco during the discussions.
Why it matters
FC Barcelona's interest in Gabriel Moscardo highlights the growing importance of young Brazilian talent in European football. The fact that his father met Deco, a Catalan club legend, also shows the personal and professional connections that can influence transfer decisions. This illustrates the strategy of Spanish clubs, such as Barcelona and Espanyol, of looking for promising players to strengthen their squads.
Context
Gabriel Moscardo is a young Brazilian midfielder who proved himself at Corinthians before joining Espanyol. His career is emblematic of the South American sector, where young talents are often spotted by European clubs thanks to their performances in youth teams.
Key points
- The Espanyol midfielder looks back on Barça's past approach.
- Gabriel Moscardo, now an Espanyol midfielder, says he was in Barça's sights in the summer of 2023 and claims that his father met Deco during the discussions.
- Espanyol midfielder opens up on past approach from Barcelona: ‘My father met with Deco’.
According to Moscardo, his level in training at Corinthians had attracted the attention of recruiters, to the point that Barcelona followed his situation closely during the summer of 2023. The player explained that contact was initiated via his family: “My father met Deco,” he confided, explicitly quoting the former international. This revelation illustrates the way in which procedures between clubs, intermediaries and families can take place when a young talent arouses the interest of the greats of Europe.
Moscardo's route is representative of the South American route to Europe, where performances in youth teams in Brazil often serve as a springboard to tests and information from European clubs. Being “scanned” or courted does not always mean an immediate transfer, but these approaches are important milestones for an aspiring player.
Now presented as an Espanyol midfielder in the media, Moscardo prefers to stay focused on his progress and his playing time rather than on past interests. His testimony, however, highlights the competition between Spanish clubs to unearth Brazilian talent and the networks often mobilized – agents, relatives, former players – to facilitate discussions.
This type of admission also allows us to understand why some young people choose to stay and learn in Brazil before taking the step towards Europe, or why they favor certain destinations over others. For observers, the mention of a figure like Deco in the discussions reinforces the idea that modern recruitment combines both sports scouting and personal relationships.
Without confirming a formal offer or contractual proposal at the time, Moscardo highlights the importance of contacts and family in these pivotal moments. It remains to follow the evolution of his trajectory: the player maintains a level of interest among European clubs and his story resonates as a further example of the close link between Brazilian training and the European transfer window.
The rest
Gabriel Moscardo, currently at Espanyol, will have to continue to prove his potential on the pitch to attract the attention of major European clubs. Although Barça's interest has been strong, it is essential for him to focus on his progress and playing time. As he develops, other opportunities could arise, particularly in view of the next FIFA World Cup.
