Despite an undefeated group stage, Iran was deprived of qualification for the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup because of a goal disallowed for offside against Egypt and then a goal conceded at the very last second during the Algeria-Austria match, which sealed its fate. The Iranian coach denounced the unfair treatment suffered by his team during the competition.

However, the storm had not passed: in the final seconds, Austria equalized with a header from Sasa Kalajdzic, sealing the fate of the Iranians. Ultimately, it was thanks to a better goal difference that Senegal took the place among the best thirds, while Cape Verde, with a record of three draws similar to that of Iran, validated its presence as second in its group.

This cruel elimination occurs in a unique context for the Iranian team. The selection had to deal with very specific conditions due to political tensions and travel restrictions linked to the situation in their country. Their training camp originally planned for Arizona was moved to Tijuana, Mexico. Players could only travel to the United States the day before their first two games and immediately left the country after each match according to the conditions of their visa. Coach Amir Ghalenoei did not hide his bitterness: he described his group as "most oppressed" and denounced the deprivation of preparation time, estimating having had less than half the necessary training time compared to other teams.
The easing of restrictions allowed the team to travel to Seattle two days early for the Egypt match, but they had to return to Tijuana right afterward. After the last meeting, Ghalenoei expressed his pride in his players while forcefully criticizing the host country, whom he accused of treating them extremely unfairly. He appealed to FIFA to prevent such situations from happening again in future editions.
Despite the elimination, the Iranian performance aroused admiration and respect worldwide. Their journey demonstrates their resilience in the face of immense obstacles, and leaves a bitter taste about what they could have accomplished under fairer conditions.
