Morgan Rogers: what place within Chelsea?
By OnzeActu · · 4 min read
Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, long-time friends, meet again at Chelsea, raising the question of their role within the squad. Their versatility could allow Chelsea to explore several tactical schemes to integrate them effectively.
Why it matters
The integration of Morgan Rogers at Chelsea could have a significant impact on the team's dynamics. His relationship with Cole Palmer and other young talents like Levi Colwill and Reece James could strengthen the cohesion within the group. In a Premier League football context, Rogers' ability to adapt quickly will be crucial to Chelsea's ambitions this season.
Key points
- Morgan Rogers: what place within Chelsea?
- Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, long-time friends, meet again at Chelsea, raising the question of their role within the squad.
- Where will Rogers fit in at Stamford Bridge?.
Their relationship began during their time together at West Brom, before Rogers joined Manchester City at just 16 years old. They quickly stood out together during City's U18 team's FA Youth Cup victory in 2020, citing their promising attacking potential.
At Chelsea, Palmer will not be Rogers' only acquaintance: both have worked alongside Levi Colwill and Reece James in the English selections. Other young people from the Manchester City academy such as Tosin Adarabioyo, Jamie Gittens, Romeo Lavia and Liam Delap also play at the London club. However, the major question remains the place that Rogers will occupy in the eleven, especially since his profile is close to that of Palmer.

According to several sources, Rogers could be mainly aligned on the left, while Palmer would occupy the role of central playmaker, in the number 10 position. This positioning would maintain competition for the right side between Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto and new recruit Geovany Quenda, with Jamie Gittens in support.
Tactically, Chelsea are considering using a four-man defense at times, but also a three-defender system, like the formula used by Xabi Alonso when he won the Bundesliga in 2024 with Bayer Leverkusen. This configuration would offer the possibility of fielding Palmer and Rogers simultaneously, playing as a double number 10, while the wingers would have a more deep-back function as attacking full-backs.
Thus, the 2024-2025 season promises to be crucial for the young Rogers, who will have to prove his ability to establish himself within a dense and talented workforce at Chelsea, while benefiting from the sporting and personal complicity of Cole Palmer to claim a place of choice in Xabi Alonso's squad.
The rest
As the season progresses, Chelsea will need to determine the best tactical scheme to maximize the impact of Rogers and Palmer on the pitch. The manager's choices regarding their use could influence not only individual performances, but also the outcome of matches in the Premier League. The next meetings will be essential to assess how these young talents integrate into the squad and contribute to Chelsea's season.
