Coming out of international retirement for the 2026 World Cup, Manuel Neuer took part in Germany's 7-1 victory against Curaçao. At 40, he became the oldest German player to play in a World Cup; This is already his fifth final phase and he claims to live it “as if it were the first”.
Manuel Neuer announced the end of his international career after the Euro two years ago. The goalkeeper finally reversed his decision to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and returned to the post in goal on Sunday during Germany's big victory against Curaçao (7-1).

At 40, Neuer became the oldest German player to play at a World Cup. This is already his fifth participation in a World Cup final phase. Questioned by FIFA, the goalkeeper said he was experiencing this edition “as if it were my first” – a veteran approach which illustrates his enthusiasm after the international break.
