Raul Jimenez qualifies Mexico for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup

In the decisive group stage encounter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Raul Jimenez played 80 minutes for Mexico in their crucial 1-0 victory over South Korea. This performance ensures the Mexicans qualify for the round of 16, making them the first nation to validate their ticket for this knockout phase.

The 35-year-old striker, who has just completed his return to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship after three seasons at Fulham, was already in good spirits during the opening match of the World Cup on June 11, marked by a goal against South Africa (2-0). This return to Molineux was made official a few days before the start of the competition.

In addition to Jimenez, West Ham United defender Edson Alvarez, also on loan to Fenerbahce in Turkey during the 2025-2026 season, was captain and defensive hero during the match against the South Koreans. Indeed, in the 16th minute, he made a spectacular acrobatic intervention on his line to repel a lofted attempt from Son Heung-min, former Tottenham striker.
