Tuesday evening, Borussia Dortmund snatched their ticket to the round of 16 of the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) with great difficulty. After quickly taking a 2-0 lead in the first part of the match, the yellow and black team saw Werder Bremen equalize in just three minutes thanks to goals from Niclas Füllkrug, with an important role from Youri Regeer, starter and decisive passer.
This meeting offered a new intense spectacle between two clubs with a rich past. Initially, the debates had leaned largely in favor of Dortmund, master of the game during the first quarter of an hour. Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring in the sixth minute on a serve from Julian Ryerson, giving the locals the advantage. About ten minutes later, Carney Chukwuemeka doubled the lead, on a pass from Jobe Bellingham. We thought then that the match was over.
Like their previous meeting in the Bundesliga, when Werder snatched a draw in the final minutes, Daniel Thioune's players did not give up. After the break, Thioune made several changes, notably sending Ludovit Reis and Niclas Füllkrug onto the field. The latter, on loan from West Ham United, had already scored nine goals in eight matches and quickly revived his team by converting a penalty.
Then in the 68th minute, Youri Regeer delivered a brilliant pass to Füllkrug who, with an incredible individual action, eliminated a defender at the halfway line before beating goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a precise strike. The score became 2-2, putting everything on the line.

The suspense remained until the last minute of added time when Marcel Sabitzer scored a masterful free kick, giving Dortmund victory. This achievement allowed the Ruhr team, currently co-leader of the Bundesliga, to continue its journey in the competition.
Former PSV player Joey Veerman started this meeting with Dortmund who, after this hard-fought victory, continue to hope in the German Cup. His former teammate Youri Regeer, also ex-Ajacied, showed his value on the Bremen side but could not avoid elimination.
This intense duel between Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen confirmed the high intensity and competitiveness of the DFB-Pokal, where each match reserves its share of surprising twists and turns until the very last seconds. All eyes now turn to the next rounds, where Dortmund will have to confirm their status.
The rest
Dortmund are now preparing for the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal, where they will face a potentially more formidable opponent. The team will need to strengthen their defense to avoid repeating the mistakes that allowed Werder to come back into the match, while maintaining their offensive momentum.
