Why it matters
Shakhtar Donetsk's decision to play at Stamford Bridge underlines the impact of the conflict in Ukraine on football. By choosing this emblematic stadium, the Ukrainian club hopes not only to ensure the safety of its players and supporters, but also to maintain a presence on the European scene, particularly in the Europa League. This situation highlights the challenges facing Ukrainian clubs in the current context.

Due to the persistent security situation in Ukraine, Shakhtar Donetsk is forced to organize its European meetings far from its historic stadium. The club has thus announced that its future home matches, as part of European competitions, will now be held at Stamford Bridge, the famous Chelsea stadium, in London.
From this evening, the confrontation against AEK will mark the start of this new era for the Ukrainian club, which will continue to wear its colors in an emblematic venue of English football. Stamford Bridge, accustomed to vibrating for the Chelsea Blues during big European evenings, will therefore become the scene of Shakhtar's European exploits on the continental scene.
The Ukrainian club is already familiar with having to play far from its bases, since the conflict broke out in 2014 in the Donbass region, forcing Shakhtar to leave Donetsk for other Ukrainian cities such as Kharkiv or Lviv, then more recently Warsaw. The collaboration with Chelsea is part of a series of fallback solutions chosen to allow the club to continue its European journey in complete safety.

Besides the logistical side, playing at Stamford Bridge represents a strong symbol and a real challenge: playing in front of a foreign audience, on a pitch which has seen so many European games. For Shakhtar, it is an opportunity to get closer to its community of London supporters and to attract the goodwill of the British public.
This decision reflects European football's solidarity with clubs facing major difficulties in their home countries. Chelsea thus opened the doors of its stadium to Shakhtar to allow it to evolve in optimal conditions on the European scene, all under the watchful eye of the UEFA authorities.
For French fans, this news is a reminder of the extent to which extra-sporting realities can impact the progress of major competitions. Shakhtar Donetsk, known for its attractive play and its respectable performances in the Europa League and the Champions League, intends to continue to defend its chances despite exile.
This evening's match against AEK will therefore be doubly special: a new stadium, a new atmosphere, but the same passion that drives these European Cup evenings. It remains to be seen whether this new setting will allow the Ukrainian club to create a surprise in its continental journey.
The rest
Shakhtar's first match at Stamford Bridge against AEK will mark the start of a new phase for the club. Shakhtar's performances in this venue could influence their course in the Europa League and strengthen their bond with London supporters. The upcoming home games will be crucial for the club as they look to recover and continue to compete at European level.
