Steve Clarke, the most successful coach in the history of the Scottish selection, announced his resignation following the team's elimination from the 2026 World Cup. Despite a recent contract renewal, non-qualification for the round of 16 pushes Clarke to turn the page after three major competitions with Scotland.
Steve Clarke announced this Saturday his resignation from his position as Scotland coach after the elimination of his team in the first round of the 2026 World Cup. Arriving in 2019, the former Scottish coach had nevertheless extended his contract until 2030 before the start of the tournament in North America. But the confirmation of the absence of qualification among the best third placed an end to the adventure.
During the group stage, Scotland lost against Morocco and Brazil, only achieving one success (1-0) against Haiti. An insufficient run to see the Scots continue into the round of 16, during their first World Cup since 1998.

In an open letter to supporters, Clarke expressed his gratitude to his players and fans: “The most emotional part of this farewell is my players, without whom we would not have experienced so many memories since 2019. They deserve all the praise and it was a real honor to be their coach. Thank you and good luck to my successor. »
Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell praised Clarke's record despite the collective disappointment: "While we are all disappointed to exit the World Cup in the first round, we must not forget the undeniable progress made under Steve. From fourth seed in 2019 to first place in our qualifying group, he has fully delivered on the mission of getting Scotland back into the big tournaments. »
The Scottish elimination was made official on Saturday in Charlotte, following Croatia's victory against Ghana. The federation also paid tribute to the supporters who made the massive trip to the United States, showing their passion for the Scottish selection.
