Trevoh Chalobah was called up to compensate for the injury of Tino Livramento in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, a few hours before kick-off against Croatia.
Trevoh Chalobah was called up to replace injured defender Tino Livramento in England's squad for the 2026 World Cup. Livramento's exit is a blow for Thomas Tuchel, who came at the very last minute, the day before the Three Lions' opening match against Croatia in Dallas.
The English FA confirmed that it had taken advantage of the time allowed by FIFA – up to 24 hours before the first match of the tournament – to replace Livramento in the 26-man squad. Chelsea defender Chalobah is on his way to the United States and is due to join the team's base camp in Kansas City, while the rest of the squad will travel to Dallas for the opening encounter.
Livramento injured his calf during a training session on Sunday afternoon. A medical examination and an MRI carried out on Monday unfortunately confirmed his inability to continue the tournament. The 23-year-old full-back, who can play on the right or left, was selected as a fall-back option behind Reece James and Nico O'Reilly and had five selections; he was part of the last victorious preparation match against New Zealand ten days ago.

Chalobah will not be available for the match against Croatia but will be able to participate in the following group matches against Ghana and Panama. The 26-year-old, who previously worked under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, has just one cap for England, coming in a defeat to Senegal last June. This season, he has made 34 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, a club who had a disappointing campaign, finishing 10th in the league.
The choice of Chalobah to join the final list comes at the expense of Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid), who is not in the group called by Tuchel - Alexander-Arnold has not been called up by the coach since last summer. Other options available at defensive end positions on the roster include Jarrell Quansah, Ezri Konsa and Djed Spence. Central defender Dan Burn can also help out at left back.
For Livramento, it is a huge disappointment: the World Cup was to be his first major international competition after his five appearances for the national team. England, which opens its tournament against Croatia (match scheduled for Wednesday at 9 p.m. BST in Dallas), will quickly have to cope without the versatility offered by the young Newcastle full-back.
