Among the founding clubs of the Spanish La Liga, Real Unión d'Irún has long embodied the history of Iberian football before seeing its prestige decline over the decades. Anchored in the Basque Country, this club shone in the interwar period, accumulating titles and respect, but difficult times caught up with it, threatening its very existence.
It is in this particularly complicated context that a name well known to European football fans emerged as a beacon of hope: Unai Emery. Today a successful coach of Aston Villa in the Premier League, but also a former technician for Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Sevilla FC, Emery is personally invested in the survival of Real Unión. Far from the glitz of the high international level, it was a commitment from the heart that pushed him to act.
The relationship between Unai Emery and Real Unión is not new. The family history goes hand in hand with that of the club: the coach's grandfather, Antonio Emery, was an essential figure there; his father, Juan Emery, also marked his time there as a player and coach. With Unai, there are now four generations of the Emery family who are forging unwavering links with Real Unión. When financial and sporting difficulties plunged the structure into uncertainty, the Basque coach did not hesitate to answer the call.
Thanks to his support – whether through his professional network, his notoriety or strategic investments – Unai Emery enabled Real Unión to stabilize its situation and launch an ambitious recovery project. If he is not in charge on the field on a daily basis, his moral and strategic involvement has made it possible to avoid the worst for the legendary club. This approach fits perfectly into the Spanish tradition of respect for sporting heritage and attachment to roots.
While most of the spotlight is on his exploits in England, Emery never forgets the land of his ancestors. His intervention not only saved a club in danger, but it also symbolizes the power of football to bring generations together around common values: loyalty, heritage and passion. Real Unión, far from the light of major competitions, is now continuing its journey thanks to the selfless commitment of one of its most illustrious children.
