Arne Slot says goodbye to Liverpool: 'I'm leaving, the club is exactly where it needs to be'

Arne Slot took advantage of an interview with the Liverpool Echo to send a final message to Reds supporters after his forced departure from the club. The Dutch technician, who arrived almost a year ago, recalled the intensity of the emotions linked to the locker room and the famous Anfield tunnel.

“When you pass under this famous sign in the Anfield tunnel, you feel a mix of emotions. Responsibility, obviously, for the rich history of this club,” Slot began. He underlined the expectations placed on the institution: “There are naturally expectations: to honor the heritage which, for 134 years, has made Liverpool one of the greatest clubs in world football. »

The coach praised the dazzlingness of his experience: “That all these emotions, after barely twelve months, culminated in a Premier League title was extraordinary to say the least. It was not only a trophy, but also a reward for the hard work, sacrifice and dedication of so many people within the club. »

Slot kept a particular memory of the festivities surrounding this coronation, which he compared to those of 2020 – private at the time due to the pandemic: “This title was even more special because you experienced it with us: singing our songs, celebrating the goals. The day we received the trophy, you were there, in the streets around the stadium, filled with anticipation at Anfield. »

The message could not end without mentioning the tragic disappearance of Diogo Jota. “The fact that we lost Diogo only a few weeks after our joint celebrations is indescribable. Above all, I want to remember him as a teammate, a friend and an exceptional human being who touched the lives of thousands of people every time he wore this club emblem,” said Slot, visibly marked.

“In one of the most difficult times this club has gone through, the love, compassion and support of the Liverpool family has been extraordinary. Now that I'm leaving, I would be remiss if I didn't say that the way you honored Diogo and carried his memory will stay with me forever. »

On the bond forged with the supporters, the 47-year-old coach insisted: “The bond that we share goes beyond football, beyond European nights at Anfield or the song 'You'll Never Walk Alone' sung by the Kop. You gave me a warm welcome from the start and helped me on my journey. I am deeply grateful to you. »

Slot also offered wider thanks to the entire club: “It has been a pleasure working with you all. Liverpool's twentieth domestic title belongs to us all and will remain an important chapter in the club's history. We can all be proud of it. I leave with the feeling that the club is exactly where it should be: at the top of European football. »

Before concluding, he recalled the sporting importance of the objective achieved: “Securing the Champions League was a major responsibility, it guarantees Liverpool to continue to compete at the highest level next season and beyond. Change is part of football, but I know this club will continue to make its supporters proud. »

“When I first stood under that sign in the Anfield tunnel, I knew what this club demanded. I leave with the feeling that we never stopped doing it,” concluded Arne Slot.
