FIFA: Balogun's red card was not rescinded, suspension

The FIFA Disciplinary Commission has published its official explanation regarding the Balogun affair. Contrary to certain interpretations, the authority specifies that it has not canceled the red card inflicted on the player on July 1: the dismissal remains and the suspension of a match linked to this card is confirmed. However, this suspension was suspended for a period of one year under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

Concretely, the measure adopted means that Balogun will only serve the one-match suspension if he commits, during the period of one year, a new serious offense of a similar nature. FIFA insists that this suspension procedure does not in any way imply a cancellation of the initial expulsion: the red card remains recorded in the player's disciplinary file.

The international body also underlines the independence of its Disciplinary Commission and wishes to dissociate the decision from any allegation of match manipulation, a situation expressly excluded by the aforementioned article. FIFA recalls that this reprieve mechanism has already been used in the context of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, establishing a procedural precedent.

In addition to the deferred suspension, the monetary penalty imposed on Balogun is $40,000. FIFA specifies that the American federation is jointly responsible for paying this fine. The financial amount was distributed equally between violations of articles 14 and 66 of the Disciplinary Code, according to the explanation provided by the body.

In its press release, FIFA also recalls that examining the consequences of a red card is a common practice in European football. The organization thus seeks to clarify disciplinary procedures and respond to criticism or misunderstandings raised following the announcement of the decision.

On a sporting level, confirmation of the red card means that the disciplinary act remains recorded and may, if necessary, be taken into account in the assessment of possible repeat offenses or future behavior. But, barring another similar incident in the coming year, Balogun should not have to automatically serve the one-match suspension linked to the July 1 expulsion.

The American federation and the player now have the official FIFA text explaining the decision, which should put an end to uncertainties about the exact nature of the sanction and its immediate consequences.
