Johan Vasquez, Genoa defender, looks back on his excellent season in Serie A, marked by his captaincy and his confidence in his club, before tackling the World Cup with Mexico.
Interviewed by Fox Deportes, Johan Vasquez, central defender of Genoa, spoke about his 2025-2026 season with the Italian club, giving a very positive assessment of his career. “Since the start of the season, I have imagined all this,” he confides according to Buoncalcioatutti.it. I wanted to play and reach 30 matches, and that is exactly what happened, even more since I have played 53 matches since June 2025, even counting the friendly against Australia. »
The Mexican looks back on the difficulties encountered at the start of the year: “We started a little poorly and changed coaches. But subsequently, we ensured our maintenance in Serie A. This is what I wanted to convey to my wife: no matter the years that I play football, this season was the best, even if it was complicated, especially because I was appointed captain. It’s one of the greatest responsibilities in football. Of course, there are things that you learn to manage with time and the group, but it was an incredible year for me. »

Aware of the stakes, Vasquez shows his determination to succeed in the World Cup with his selection. “Now I’m thinking about the World Cup. This season, I chose to stay, to trust my club, to be captain and to have playing time to arrive in great shape. Everything I had imagined came true, thank God. »
The defender also addresses the numerous requests received: “The ‘big leap’ could have taken place last year. This would surely have meant changing championships and countries, but I made other choices. This year I became the Mexican player with the most matches in Serie A. Nothing was offered to me, it's never easy. I don't want to give up anything for no reason, just for a leap into the unknown. I feel good here, in town, with the team. My wife and I often talk about the fact that our children were born in Genoa. Before thinking about the future, you have to enjoy the present. It’s a moment of peace, we know the city and ourselves. We have to make the most of it. »
A speech which demonstrates maturity and a strong desire to succeed with Genoa before attacking the World Cup with Mexico.
