Argentina recorded an important victory against England in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, winning 2-1 on July 15 to advance to the final of the tournament. The Argentines turned the match around after being down 0-1, to snatch a victory which marks their first victory against the England team since 1998.

This success has a particular flavor as the confrontations between Argentina and England were marked by memorable episodes. Argentina's last success dates back precisely to the 1998 World Cup, during a round of 16 that went down in history: at the end of regulation time and overtime, the score was 2-2, and Argentina won 4-3 during the penalty shootout. This 1998 match is also known for Michael Owen's goal and for the expulsion of David Beckham, sanctioned after a blow given to Diego Simeone.

The victory obtained in the semi-final of the 2026 World Cup confirms the Argentinians' ability to produce reactions of character in key moments. By winning 2-1, Argentina reached the final of the tournament and will meet Spain for the summit match which will decide the world champion.
