Liverpool: Arne Slot sacked, Cody Gakpo requests his departure

Dutch coach Arne Slot was fired by Liverpool after a mixed season, concluded with a Premier League title. This change has immediate repercussions, in particular on Cody Gakpo, who would have made a transfer request.
Arne Slot, who arrived at Liverpool in 2024 to succeed Jürgen Klopp, is already leaving the Reds after only one season at the head of the team. The Dutch technician had nevertheless achieved the feat of winning the Premier League in his first year, giving a glimpse of a promising era. A costly transfer window, valued at £450 million, however, did not allow the club to move forward, with the rest of the season no longer meeting expectations.
At the end of an internal audit conducted by Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, management decided to terminate Arne Slot's contract, which initially ran until 2027. Among the favorites to replace him, Andoni Iraola would be close to signing.

This major change could disrupt the upcoming exercise for several key players in the locker room. Cody Gakpo, considered one of Slot's executives – the Dutch striker having played 32 Premier League matches under him for 7 goals – finds himself in limbo. According to Dutch sources, Gakpo has officially submitted a request to leave, believing that he no longer has his place without Slot. Last season, he obtained a new contract increased to 250,000 pounds per week, but the new sports management does not give him the same guarantee.
Under contract until 2030, Liverpool is however in a strong position financially. Few clubs can afford to pay both his transfer and his salary demands. Atlético Madrid, which would particularly interest Diego Simeone, could represent a way out. It remains to be seen whether Gakpo will indeed take the plunge, he who, despite his successes during the title season, has not always been unanimous among Reds supporters.
