Why it matters

The arrival of Divin Mubama at Southampton is crucial for the club, especially after the departure of Shea Charles. His Championship experience and recent pre-season performances with Manchester City add depth to Southampton's squad.

Southampton formalized on Wednesday the arrival on loan for a season of young English striker Divin Mubama, from Manchester City. This transaction comes on the same day as the sale of their Northern Irish midfielder Shea Charles to Fulham for an estimated £30 million.

Aged 21, Mubama is coming off a season spent at Stoke City in the Championship, where he scored 5 goals in 28 appearances. Unfortunately, his season was cut short in January 2024 by a ligament injury in a 0-0 draw against Queens Park Rangers, a shock described as "terrible" by Stoke manager Mark Robins.

The player, trained at the West Ham academy, joined Manchester City in the summer of 2024 after playing 18 matches with the Hammers, including eight as a substitute in the Premier League. Although he did not play in the Europa Conference League final won by West Ham in June 2023, he was on the bench.

Recently, Mubama shone in pre-season with Manchester City, scoring against Inter Milan and the K-League All Stars during the Asian tour, while providing an assist in the 3-1 win over Atlético Madrid in Seoul.

In his first statements as a Saints player, Mubama showed his enthusiasm: “With the style of play of this team and the quality of the players around me, I will be served. It's up to me to put the ball in the bottom. I'm coming back from a successful pre-season, I'm feeling fresh and sharp, so I'm very excited to get started. »

Johannes Spors, Southampton sporting director, praised the speed of the operation: “As soon as we learned of Divin's availability, we acted quickly. It’s not just for his exceptional goalscoring skills, but also for his work ethic and determination to help the team this season. »

This loan from Mubama should allow Southampton to compensate for the departure of Shea Charles, while bringing dynamism to the attack in a very demanding English championship. The player will thus have the opportunity to continue his progress in the Premier League under the orders of an ambitious team.

The rest

With Mubama now in the squad, Southampton will hope he can settle in quickly and make a significant impact in upcoming Premier League matches. The club will also have to manage his return after his ligament injury, but his past performances suggest promising potential. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how he performs on the field and contributes to the Saints' season.
